Any time you ask someone about the great things they saw at CES, you need to take their response with a grain (or heaping tablespoon) of salt. The issue is scope. The Consumer Electronics Show is far too big for any one person to get an accurate perspective given all of the keynotes, workshops press events, booths, theaters, and corporate suites to be navigated over a handful of days. For me, I try to sneak away from the suites for a few hours to track down major trends, look into...
On the first workday after CES, there's a lot to reflect on. Many companies have made some big product announcements, and Google has stepped up its game (or at least its marketing) in its ongoing war against Amazon's Alexa. In the TV space, we see a number of interesting trends beginning to emerge. TV Trends from CES 2019 Bigger is better 8K video and artificial intelligence Platform-agnostic digital support Bigger is Better Parks...

Movie theaters have lived a long life, having bolstered the financial health of the film industry for years and entertained millions of viewers. Theaters provide a unique blend of public and private entertainment, allowing us to experience the spectacle of film in our own seat but in a community of viewers. However, despite its position as a venue for the art of film, this unique channel for content distribution is struggling as it seeks a resurgence rather than a slow death....

Another day of meetings and discovery at CES 2018. Here are a few additional thoughts on what I have seen at the show on day two. 8K is moving closer to reality. Yes. I understand. 4K is just gaining a foothold in the market, and HDR provides a visual pop at retail that may be more compelling than 4K alone. Yet, new 8K-based products are in evidence, with several slated for public release later this year. Samsung’s massive 146-inch “The Wall” TV (which is actually modular...

The Apple Event was today, and Apple made a series of interesting announcements about its iPhone lineup. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were announced, and the rumored iPhone X was confirmed. These new iPhones offer more powerful processing via Apple's new A11 chip, as well as an Apple-designed GPU. This allows Apple to offer on-device machine learning and computer vision-enabled abilities which enable a number of new use cases. Apple's machine learning tech enables: Native...
Within the past month and a half, a new type of video service is available for subscription. The release of AMC Premiere and FX+ are the start of a new breed of these services. Available only to pay-TV subscribers, these services allow consumers to pay a fee per month and receive all of the shows from one network or channel ad free and on demand. They are not OTT services because they are not delivered over-the-top. Instead, they function more like premium, ad-free TV Everywhere...

Much like last year at CES, Amazon, without a booth or formal attendance at the show, is still a dominant presence with Alexa. With companies unveiling both built-in Alexa products and integrations, Amazon is extending its lead as a way to tie together the smart home with voice-enabled capabilities. Some announcements from this year’s show include the following alliances with varying companies and Alexa: Ford – One of the largest U.S. manufacturers of cars, Ford...

Today, 59% of U.S. broadband households subscribe to an OTT video service. Two-thirds of broadband households own a connected entertainment device, and more than one-quarter own a streaming media player. 2015 saw key trends in the connected entertainment world, trends that will continue to affect the industry in 2016. As the new year progresses, players in the global market will face new opportunities and challenges. Parks Associates and Lynx Technology recently partnered...
