Broadband Consumer Market to Reach 24 Million Subscribers in the US by
2004
The broadband consumer market will reach
24 million subscribers by the end of 2004, accounting for one-third of all online
households in that year, according to Parks Associates' new study
Computing, Internet Service, and
Broadband Access @ Home. This study provides detailed analysis of home computing,
residential Internet service, and broadband access in the US consumer market, with an
emphasis on the third.

Figure 1
Based on current trends in the market, Parks Associates asserts that:
-
Household PC penetration will reach 56% by the end of 1999 and 71% by 2004; multi-PC
penetration rate will increase from 18% in 1999 to 34% in 2004.
-
Household Internet penetration will reach 67% by 2004, a 72% increase from 1999's
penetration rate of 39%.
-
The subscriber base for broadband Internet services, which include cable modem service,
DSL, satellite-based Internet access, and broadband fixed wireless, will reach 24 million
by the end of 2004, accounting for 34% of all online households and 50% of the total
revenues from residential Internet access.

Hongjun Li, Parks Associates and author of the report, says
that the proliferation of computers and Internet services in the consumer market will
fundamentally change the way Americans live in the new millennium. These changes will
result in unparalleled new business opportunities for service providers as well as
equipment manufacturers. "However," Mr. Li warns, "there are too many
players competing for increasingly tighter margins in the consumer market. Technology
alone is no guarantee of success. The key to survival and prosperity includes a
combination of quick responsiveness to market dynamics, innovative marketing, and
operational excellence."
