Major Players in Home Networking Converge at CONNECTIONS'99

(Continental Automated Buildings Association) and
Parks Associates recently announced the
keynote speakers and platinum sponsors for
CONNECTIONS'99: Enabling the Networked Home. CONNECTIONS'99,
to be held May 12-14 in Vancouver, BC, is the first and only conference to extensively
address all aspects of networks in the home in relation to networks to
the home via the residential gateway.
Platinum sponsors for CONNECTIONS'99 include the Home API Working Group, IBM,
Intel, and Sony. The first keynote speaker, Steve Hester, executive vice
president of Mitsubishi Electric North America, will open the conference on Thursday by
discussing Mitsubishi's role in the in the development of Home API.
John C.W. Taylor, chairman, CEO, and president of Home Wireless
Networks Inc., will deliver the keynote address for Friday. This company's communications
system provides a wireless solution to manage Internet applications, telecommunications,
and data networks.

"For consumers to realize the full potential of home computing, home networking
technologies must be based on open and interoperable standards," said Ed
Arrington, Anywhere In The Home initiative manager at Intel Architecture Labs. It
is Intel's second year to be a platinum sponsor at CONNECTIONS. "This year's
CONNECTIONS'99 conference is a natural venue to learn about the infrastructure
standards that will provide a foundation for exciting new applications and devices in the
home."
Thursday's highlights will include a speech by Mark Ireland, segment
manager of IBM's Pervasive Computing Division, about the recently announced Open Service
Gateway Specification. CONNECTIONS'99 will also host the first Home API
demonstration featuring compliant concept products from many of the Working Group members
as part of a special showcase area where attendees can view demonstrations of select
products and services throughout the conference.

Friday will begin with a breakfast sponsored by IBM and hosted by Wiring Americas'
Homes, a working group dedicated to promoting advanced wiring in new homes. Following
that, Peter Meechan, director of business development for Sony, will
address the Home Audio-Video interoperability (HAVi) specification for home entertainment
networks.
