Survey Results: Industry Views on In-Home Networks and the Residential Gateway
Results from the Continental Automated Buildings
Association (CABA) and Parks Associates survey were announced today, providing an
industry-wide perspective on in-home networks and gateways. CONNECTIONS99:
Enabling the Networked Home was held May 12-14 in Vancouver, B.C. The conference
attracted approximately 300 representatives from a variety of industries, including energy
services, computer hardware and software development and manufacturing,
telecommunications, wiring, home security, and cable.
According to
Kurt Scherf, Parks Associates in-home
networks analyst, the survey results reflect the movement made by industries in pursuit of
the mass diffusion of in-home network and residential gateway technologies. "Compared
with the results from our first residential gateway conference in 1997 (San Francisco) and
the first CONNECTIONS™ conference in 1998 (Dallas), CONNECTIONS99 attendees reflect
greater optimism for successful deployment of these residential solutions."

For example, Scherf notes that by 2005, CONNECTIONS99 attendees expect that the
residential gateway will have deployed in a wide range of US homes. "From 1997,"
Scherf said, "the number of conference attendees who feel that the RG will be more
widespread has grown significantly."
Industry results from CONNECTIONS99 indicate that 38% of industry experts believe
that the RG will be deployed in between 15-29% of US homes. This figure, Scherf said, was
up 31% from just two years ago. "I believe that the solutions being offered by groups
like the Open Service Gateway initiative (OSGi) and other companies will make the RG a
reality for many US households."
Although Scherf said that it was too early to determine if there would be a "Holy
Grail" home networking technology, 50% of survey respondents are betting on the
phoneline networking pursued by the Home Phoneline Networking Alliance (HomePNA) as the
clear industry leader. One-half of survey respondents believe that the phoneline networks
will be most successful in penetrating the mass market. One-fifth of respondents (22%)
believe that radio frequency home networks will be the most successful, whereas 10%
believe powerline networks will be the most successful.

Finally, Scherf said that addressing increased bandwidth in
second-generation home networking solutions will be critical. "The majority of survey
respondents," he said, "believe that the home network must have a bandwidth
capability of more than 10 Mbps. I think this is reflected in the speed at which
developers are looking to boost the bandwidth of such networking technologies as HomePNA,
IEEE 802.11, and the various powerline solutions."
