Computer-Enhanced Living
A Hit with Multiple-PC Households
The Early Market for Home
Networks, Internet Appliances, and Broadband Access
The multiple-PC household
representing 14% of all US households is ready to extend the power of the
home computer to applications including and beyond the residential LAN. A
newly released study from Parks Associates
Networks @ Home: Multiple-PC
Households indicates that this early market is eager for PC-based home
control and entertainment applications.
"More than one-half of multiple-PC households approximately eight
million US households find PC-based control of appliances and entertainment
applications extremely or moderately useful," said
Kurt Scherf, Parks Associates in-home
networks analyst. "Even more encouraging, our research indicates that a significant
number of consumers in this target market up to one-third of multiple-PC households
are willing to pay upwards of $500 for this kind of product, right now."
Data networks or home-based PC LANs are already found in a significant
number of multiple-PC households, the study found. Further deployment of data networks
should coincide with the steady increase expected in broadband Internet penetration.
"There are early trends that point to higher home network figures in households that
have high-speed Internet access," said
Kurt Scherf.
"There are currently more than eight million US households who believe that
high-speed Internet access is extremely or moderately
useful," he continued. "And a significant number of them are willing to pay
between $30 and $50 per month right at the sweet spot."
One way to speed the penetration of both broadband Internet access and home networking
is to bundle the installation of a high-speed modem with home networking gear. "Once
consumers realize that they can save themselves from having to purchase additional
Internet accounts, the idea of home networking becomes much more appealing,"
Kurt Scherf said. "We believe that many
multiple-PC householders would jump at the chance to have a high-speed Internet modem and
home networking hardware professionally installed at the same time."
Networks @ Home: Multiple-PC
Households consists of quantitative and qualitative data on the purchase and use
of PCs in the home, demographics of the multiple-PC household, the use of the Internet,
reaction to Internet appliances and broadband access, and early reactions to home
networks. For more information about Parks Associates or this report, please contact
