New Residential Technologies in Hot Demand
Study Targets Specific Markets for Emerging Products and Services

With a particular emphasis on computing and home entertainment components, US consumers are showing "unbridled enthusiasm for many high-tech products and services," according to a new report from Parks Associates. The report – Networks @ Home: The National Scan of Electronics Ownership – indicates that consumers are adopting new technologies for the home at a pace exceeding initial forecasts.

"This study indicates that three distinct household segments – including those with PCs and high-end entertainment components – can be targeted successfully for the early adoption of certain products and services," said Parks Associates. Networks @ Home: The National Scan of Electronics Ownership reveals growing penetration of multiple PCs, home networks, and high-end entertainment products. The growth of home LANs, which is surprisingly high among multiple-PC households, "is indeed a good sign for the early home networking marketplace."

Enthusiasm for entertainment components – home theater systems, satellite TV service, and DVD players – is particularly strong, according to the report. And while the primary market for products and services is found in higher-income households, interest in residential technology reaches across all income levels. "Lower income households have nearly as much ‘technology receptivity’ as households with higher incomes," Parks Associates noted. "The question of technology adoption then becomes much more of an issue of price."

The National Scan reveals that consumers’ wish lists for entertainment include components for enhanced audio and video performance. If money were no option, 15% of US households would add a bigger TV, 10% would add a DVD player, and 9% would add a stereo system.
