The Networked Home: From Here to There

To help you understand the burgeoning home networking industry and many of the dazzling market developments, CABA and Parks Associates will host the third annual industry conference on May 12-14 in Vancouver, BC ¾ CONNECTIONS’99: Enabling the Networked Home. This conference specifically addresses in-home networks and gateways and is a must-attend for any company that has an existing or potential stake in networked homes and residential gateways.

While the concept of a centralized, intelligent, and future-proof residential gateway   that terminates all external networks and connects to an in-home network is still in the early stages of exploration, the term "home networking" is gaining rapid attention. Numerous home networking solutions, both consortium-based and proprietary, have suddenly emerged from everywhere to cash in on this new market opportunity. This should not be a surprise, as the stunning growth of multi-PC households, the proliferation of the Internet, and the technical/wiring complications of traditional computer networking solutions have set a perfect stage for the birth of a home networking industry.

Alongside home networking developments, the concept of residential gateways is now being revisited because gateways are, after all, vital links between external networks and soon-to-be-prolific in-home networks. Traditional gateways cannot meet the demand of a networked home; therefore, new gateways must be developed. But what form will they take? Who are (or should be) developing new gateways? How will they impact industry convergence and consumers’ digital lifestyle?

CONNECTIONS’99 attendees will have an opportunity to hear perspectives from key industry players, gather information on various standards and products that are here or on the way, and seek new business opportunities through visiting the sponsoring companies’ table-top displays. In addition, two workshops will be held prior to the conference: The Business of Home Networking and Residential Network Technology. For more information on sponsoring, attending CONNECTIONS’99, or attending one of the pre-conference workshops, please call 972-490-1113.
