Lutron: Customer awareness is biggest driver for the connected consumer market

Matt Swatsky, Director of Product Management, Lutron, provides insight on several key industry trends for Parks Associates’ 20th-annual CONNECTIONS Conference, which will be held May 24-26 in San Francisco:

How is your company engaging consumers through new technology solutions?

Lutron products provide a great experience both inside and outside the home, whether it’s dimming the lights to create a certain look and feel in a room, or having the flexibility to control lights remotely. Lutron has been in the dimmer market for 55 years and in the smart home market for 25 years. With that experience comes a great understanding of our customers’ wants and needs and delivering reliable, easy-to-use products. This includes putting control where customers need it most (on the wall, next to the bed, or an app on your phone) and the peace of mind offered by system scheduling (lights are set to turn on and off at select times of day).

What is the biggest change you have seen in the past year in the connected home and entertainment industries?

Customer awareness has grown significantly thanks to companies like Amazon, Samsung, and Google (Nest). They have invested a lot of time and energy educating consumers about the benefits and simplicity of a smart home.

What do you think is the biggest driver for the connected consumer market?

Customer awareness.

What is the greatest challenge for the connected home industry in the next year?

Over the next year, the biggest challenge the connected home industry will continue to face is explaining the value and benefits to consumers. A connected home is experiential and personal and translating that story is challenging. Once customers have a delightful, reliable experience, they tend to buy more.
