Accelerating Smart Home Adoption

Smart home devices hold the potential to increase efficiency, cut costs and enhance convenience for consumers. Yet, the home as an integrated hub of Internet-connected devices has not yet gained mainstream adoption. However, this may be about to change. Research data from Parks Associates indicate that 43 percent of U.S. broadband households are willing to purchase a smart home package that offers home management, safety and security features. This is good news for companies looking for opportunities to offer innovative products that further advances within the rapidly evolving Internet of Things (IoT) marketplace.

Google’s Nest took a significant step this week toward establishing its learning thermostat as an anchor for an array of smart home communications and capabilities. An article in Forbes describes how the new “Works with Nest” program invites developers to align gadgets and services with its technology. As an example, Mercedes-Benz’s cars will be programmed to communicate a driver’s anticipated arrival time to Nest so it can adjust the temperature of the residence accordingly. Other initial integrations include the digital mobile assistant Google Now and Jawbone's wearable fitness tracker UP.
