Philips: We are leading an expansion in the connected health market towards medical-grade devices

Prior to speaking at the 2016 Connected Health Summit, Jeroen Brouwer, Director of Business Development and Sales at Philips, answered several key industry questions:

What’s new in 2016 that keeps you upbeat/optimistic about the connected health market?

I am very optimistic about the connected health market. We are leading an expansion in the connected health market towards medical grade devices (including the wearable). Also, there is a strong expansion towards disease management and behavior change services that are building on these new medical grade wearables. I am also very upbeat about the fact that CMS, health systems, and health plans are taking bold steps in reimbursing for intensive behavior change programs such as pre-diabetics and pre-hypertensives. We are proud to stay that Philips has taken the step towards serving the population that needs to address the risk-factors with the launch of health watch and an eco-system of connected health devices

What do you anticipate to happen in 2017-2018 that would have the biggest impact on the connected health market?

Up until now there has been primary focus on technology and wearables in the context of fitness. I believe this will remain to be a strong segment for the wearables market. However, there is a new wave of wearables, that will be muc more medically oriented. Some of these wearables will work in the background and will be for condition monitoring. Others will be more focused around enablers to drive behavior change. In this new wave, it will be all around accurately diagnosing and accurately providing feedback around health parameters.

Jeroen spoke on the panel session "From Selling Products to Selling an Integrated Care Experience" on Wednesday, August 31, at 8:45am. Other speakers on the panel included Livongo Health, Omron Healthcare, and Johnson & Johnson.
