Tom Kerber, our director of smart home research, said:
"From a home controls perspective, the potential acquisition of DirectTV by AT&T creates several synergies. Last summer, DirectTV acquired Lifeshield, a leader in the self-installed security market. With Lifeshield, DirectTV began to offer its nearly 4 million new customers the option to bundle security with the core DirectTV video products. AT&T on the other hand, chose to develop its own systems, including its own central monitoring stations. While AT&T systems must be installed by AT&T, the Lifeshield product was designed for the DIY market. Synergy opportunities include converting existing Lifeshield customers to AT&T central monitoring, converting 3rd party source products to Lifeshield products, and expanding AT&T’s smart home solution to include a DIY offering."
