Learn more about the CONNECTIONS Summit at CES session: Smart Home Standards & Platforms: Who’s Winning featuring speakers from Home Connectivity Alliance, The Home Depot, Z-Wave Alliance, and LG Electronics!
Yoon Ho Choi, President, Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA)
HCA was focusing on long-life appliances, such as refrigerators. We decided we need to have that as a separate alliance to focus on these long life products.
There are many ways to get to granular data. We focus on what utilities need to provide the best energy utilization. We take a non-agnostic approach to getting at that information, like in chapters.
Nick Millette, Product Development Merchant - Smart Home, The Home Depot
I’m not sure that the mass market consumer is ready to maintain the automations. The building blocks need to be there. Right now, the automations are more easy for the tech enthusiasts.
The mass market consumer is going to ask what is the simplest platform that offers the most value.
Michelle Mindala-Freeman, Chief Operating Officer, Connectivity Standards Alliance
Matter is a standard that creates a common language. It’s not a full stack solution, with radio. But it allows various layers to be built, such as over Wi-Fi.
Today, companies bring products through a Matter certification process. We have developed a lab in Oregon that can test these devices in real-world situations, going beyond the basic certifications, which allows improved performance and quicker go to market.
Avi Rosenthal, Managing Partner | Chairman, BlueConnect Partners | Z-Wave Alliance
We don’t see Matter as a competitor to Z-wave. They answer different needs. And many of the these standards will play in the same sandbox.
Z-wave has often been focused on residential, but is now branching out to commercial solutions-for example, long-range solutions such as multifamily.
Stefan Witkamp, CEO, Homey, part of LG Electronics
There are already standards, and a lot of the products on these standards are interoperable, and a lot of people are choosing a specific product with its own standard. A lot of people may want to mix and match.
A smart home doesn’t really feel smart if it’s 20 different apps and you have to open 5 to set your away routine.
