As the Internet of Everything expands, the role of the home gateway is evolving. Over 80% of U.S. broadband households own a home network router, approximately two-thirds have an Internet-connected CE device (such as a smart TV, Blu-ray player, streaming media device, game console, or DVR), and 16% own at least one smart home device (such as a smart thermostat, door locks, or lighting).
Parks Associates and Qualcomm recently co-hosted a complimentary industry webcast that stressed the importance of developing future home gateways that can connect all smart home devices to the cloud and to one another.
Research highlights from the presentation included:
- Smart product adoption across multiple product types and categories
- Frequency of device problems experienced by smart home product owners in the U.S.
- Privacy and security concerns among smart home product owners
- Number of consumers who find interoperability between smart home devices to be important
Speakers on the webcast included Todd Antes, Vice President, Product Management, Qualcomm Atheros and Tom Kerber, Director, Research, Home Controls & Energy, Parks Associates.
