Julian Durand, SVP Product Management & CSO at Intertrust, will be speaking
at Smart Energy Summit at DISTRIBUTECH in Dallas, TX, March 25–26. In anticipation of the event, Julian shares his insights on how energy providers are responding to changing consumer demand for energy management solutions.
How are energy providers responding to consumer demand for greater visibility and control over their energy use?
Energy providers are adopting secure IoT-enabled smart meters and trusted distributed ledgers to enhance consumer visibility while ensuring data integrity and privacy. They are also integrating zero-trust architectures and standardized APIs to improve interoperability across energy management platforms. Most important, hierarchical control of systems and end points is being implemented to deal with complex overlapping ownership and governance models.
What partnerships are driving the adoption of energy management solutions, and what barriers remain?
Partnerships between utilities, cybersecurity firms, and IoT standards bodies (e.g., TEIA) are driving the adoption of trusted energy management. However, interoperability challenges and regulatory fragmentation still hinder seamless data exchange and trust between ecosystems.
How can energy providers balance grid reliability, sustainability goals, and cost efficiency while keeping consumers engaged?
Balancing reliability, sustainability, and cost requires energy providers to implement zero-trust security, encrypted data exchanges, and AI-driven grid management/control. Secure federated identity and cross-platform interoperability standards are key to maintaining consumer engagement without compromising security.
