Smart Home and the Future of Energy: Insights from Vutility

Parks Associates continues its twenty-sixth annual CONNECTIONS™ with our in-person conference in Frisco, Texas on May 17-19. Joel Berntsen, Vice President of Strategy and Partnerships at Vutility, will be featured on the panel, Paradigm Shift: Smart Home and the Future of Energy, on May 18 at 10:15 AM CT, addressing how major changes in the energy landscape will shift how consumers manage their home energy in the future. Prior to the session, Joel provided insights on how smart home products are evolving and consumer insights that will have an impact over the next few years.

How are smart home products and services evolving to serve multidwelling unit (MDUs) markets? What key challenges and opportunities are manufacturers facing?

Property managers are facing more stringent requirements to provide verifiable emission data from their facilities for ESG reporting and energy usage intensity (EUI) compliance. Coordinating this with tenants and utilities is extremely challenging, so submetering across MDU portfolios is becoming essential to maximize the valuation of properties. The value of scalable, behind-the-meter data goes beyond compliance, as service providers can help identify underlying efficiency opportunities as well as improve unit and equipment maintenance.

How do consumers view technology now versus before the Pandemic?

The Home Energy Management (HEMs) paradigm shifted during COVID. With millions more of us working primarily from home, the ways we derive value from our connected energy management devices needs to shift. Service providers can and should still focus on core values of comfort, savings and peace of mind, but we have to find new ways to get there. We can no longer depend on chopping HVAC loads for hours at a time, as the new commute is 30 feet instead of 30 miles. Moving beyond smart scheduling and finding ways to use high-resolution energy data to support optimal maintenance, performance and efficiency of HVAC and other appliances is now a crucial extension of the service provider's value proposition.
