Staples Launches New Home Automation System

Staples will launch a new home automation system, called Staples Connect, which will be sold online and in its U.S. stores. The new system is similar to Lowe’s Iris, but has more than the DIY offerings from other mass marketers. The Web-connected hub can communicate with thermostats, lights, door locks and other smart devices for remote monitoring and control over the Internet. The system is powered by Zonoff, the cloud-based home-control platform that also drives Somfy’s Tahoma control system.

What differentiates Staples Connect from the Iris system is its integration with Lutron lighting controls and motorized shades. Lutron’s ClearConnect wireless radio and protocol are embedded in the Staples Connect hub, which also includes Wi-Fi and Z-Wave radios. As a part of the partnership, Lutron is creating a new line of affordable dimmers with new version of ClearConnect wireless technology that is not in its other wireless systems.

In addition to Lutron products, the system will be compatible with Yale locks, Jasco/GE lighting, Honeywell’s Z-Wave thermostat, the Z-Wave smoke detector from First Alert, D-Link cameras, Philips Hue lighting, the Doorbotcamera/doorbell, and the Ivee voice-enabled alarm clock. Each product will communicate locally with the Staples Connect hub, and then with the cloud to incorporate IP-based functions.
