Analysts and Industry Leaders Will Discuss Connected Health Market Trends at 20th-annual CONNECTIONS™ Connected Home Conference
A recent study by Parks Associates and AARP finds that 117 million Americans will need caregiving assistance by 2020, either as care recipients or family caregivers. Currently more than 80% of caregivers in U.S. broadband households spend over an hour a day performing their caregiving tasks, and as their numbers increase, the demand for connected health solutions to alleviate their workload will increase.
Parks Associates will address developments in connected health and its role to promote independent living at home, as well as the next steps for a more holistic connected home experience, at the 20th-annual CONNECTIONS™: The Premier Connected Home Conference, taking place May 24-26 in San Francisco.
“The connected health market represents several interesting use cases that cross over to the smart home industry,” said Harry Wang, Senior Research Director, Parks Associates. “Consumers spend less than 1% of their time interacting with the healthcare system. Home, on the other hand, is where consumers spend most time with their family, care for themselves and others, and enjoy life—food, drink, exercise, sleep—experiences that also impact their health and well-being.”
Wang will discuss innovations that will increase consumer interest with connected health devices during three interactive panel sessions at CONNECTIONS™.
The session “IoT: Smart Home and Connected Health Applications,” Tuesday, May 24, 1:15 P.M., features the following speakers:
- Joe Liu, CEO, MivaTek / Home8
- Kian Saneii, Chief Executive Officer, Independa, Inc.
- Tim Smokoff, Group Vice President, Health & Wellness, Nortek Security
- Krijn van der Raadt, Vice President of IT and Software Development, GreatCall
- Gene Wang, CEO and Co-founder, People Power
“As we move from ‘patient-centric’ to ‘person-centric,’ from the institution to the residence, and in general from ‘volume-based’ to ‘value based’ healthcare, the future of healthcare is happening in the consumer’s home,” said Kian Saneii, Chief Executive Officer, Independa, Inc. “The winning solutions in this area are all about integration, consumerization, and the seamless extension of traditional healthcare institutions into the person’s residence.”
"One of the most important things we can do is to take good care of the people who loved us the most, when we were little," said Gene Wang, CEO of People Power. "The Internet of Things enables senior care, allowing our elders to age with dignity in their own homes."
The session “IoT: Wearables and Smart Home Use Cases,” Wednesday, May 25, 4:30 P.M., features the following speakers:
- Dave Evans, CTO, Stringify
- Francis Hoe, Operations Manager, Misfit Wearables, a Fossil Company
- Mark Prince, Vice President Consumer Business, Withings
“Rarely does a technology come along that is so transformational, that it has the power to shape how we work, play, and live,” said Dave Evans, CTO, Stringify. “While IoT holds great promise, it comes with its own set of challenges. Ease of use often takes a backseat to complexity. Interoperability issues guarantee that not all of your connected things work with other connected things. Consumers are often forced into IoT ecosystems limiting their options. The true power of IoT often hides behind an alphabet soup of acronyms and standards that confuses instead of clarifies. Technology should be simple yet powerful, and it should work for you (not the other way around).”
The session “Consumerization of Healthcare: Trends and Technology,” Thursday, May 26, 11:15 A.M., features the following speakers:
- Nancy Green, Global Practice Lead - Healthcare, Verizon
- Kyle Kline, Telemedicine Product Marketing Manager, A&D Medical
- Dr. Sanjay Patil, CMIO, MDLive
- Casey Pittock, President and CEO, Tunstall Americas
- Lisa Uhrmacher, Director of Strategic Partnerships, Vodafone
"Health IT is playing a crucial role in the advancement of patient-centric care," said Kyle Kline, Telemedicine Product Manager for A&D Medical. "By providing consumers with easy-to-use tools to improve behavior modification, increase education, and provide actionable feedback, we can help prevent or delay the onset of chronic illnesses."
“There has been a shift in demand over the past 15 years from the end user to the caregiver, in terms of what we now call smart home connected health technology and services,” said Casey Pittock, CEO of Tunstall Americas. “The caregiver is in control, making decisions for their aging family member, or in the case of professional caregivers, for their patients – and as a world leader in connected healthcare, it is incumbent on us to effectively raise awareness with these caregivers about the innovative and affordable solutions available to help people stay healthy and safe at home.”
“Healthcare is taking up a large part of the IoT, driven in large part by the demand for change in service delivery and quality, but many of the most at-risk consumers are still under-informed about new wellness options in the smart home,” Wang said. “CONNECTIONS™ will highlight new business models using connected devices to engage consumers and strategies to target key consumer segments with IoT solutions.”
