20% of U.S. broadband households plan to acquire a networked security camera in the next 12 months

CONNECTIONS™ Session sponsored by Icontrol Networks features executives from Cox, Honeywell Connected Home, Time Warner Cable, and WeatherBug Home

Parks Associates today announced new smart home research showing nearly 20% of U.S. broadband households plan to acquire a networked security camera in the next 12 months and a similar number plan to buy a smart door lock. 360 View: Residential Security and Smart Home notes smart home devices with security/safety benefits have high rates of purchase intentions among U.S. consumers. The research firm will host the 20th-annual CONNECTIONS™: The Premier Connected Home Conference May 24-26 in San Francisco, where analysts and executives will examine new consumer channel strategies for smart home solutions.

Among U.S. broadband households with a home security system, the ability to protect one’s home while traveling is the top driver for their security purchases, but remote access capability is also very influential in motivating their security purchase. Nearly 40% of home security households claim this ability as a key driver for their security ownership.

Factors that were very influential in driving a home security system purchase

“Consumer interest in smart home safety and security connected products is expanding into the wider mass market,” said Stuart Sikes, President, Parks Associates. “As new channels expand, the competition for customers will intensify, with retailers, service providers, and manufacturers all in the mix. At CONNECTIONS™, we will examine consumer motivations, the convergence and conflicts between the service and device ecosystems, and how they can integrate with the connected home and consumer-based IoT.”

Sikes will discuss this smart home research at the CONNECTIONS™ session “Service Providers and Device Makers: Smart Home Friends or Foes?”, sponsored by Icontrol Networks. He will moderate a panel of industry experts in a discussion on consumer engagement and expectations in the smart home and business models that extend the roles of manufacturers and service providers. Panelists include:

  • Amena Ali, SVP and General Manager, WeatherBug Home
  • Kristine Faulkner, Vice President / General Manager, Home Security & Smart Home, Cox
  • Scott Harkins, Vice President IoT Partner Programs, Honeywell Connected Home
  • Letha McLaren, CMO, Icontrol Networks
  • Adam Mayer, VP, Strategy and New Business Development, Time Warner Cable

“Consumers expect smart home technology to make their lives easier, not complicate them,” said Letha McLaren, CMO, Icontrol Networks. “This is an industry issue that should stay behind the scenes. Every player in the industry – from manufacturers to service providers – needs to work together to make adoption simpler for consumers.”
