Understanding Dementia: Insights from Kris Bowing on Alzheimer's and Aphasia

As a follow up to a recent podcast with Kris Bowing (long time industry professional), he shared some additional thoughts about Dementia and Aphasia. In the context of Alzheimer’s, which is a progressive dementia that impairs memory, judgment, and general cognitive functioning, aphasia often begins with word-finding problems, including difficulty choosing or recalling the right word.

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of neurological conditions affecting the brain that get worse over time. Here are some common types of dementia and their effects:

  1. Alzheimer’s Disease: This is the most common cause of dementia. It often involves memory loss, which is usually one of the early symptoms.
  2. Vascular Dementia: This type of dementia is caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, often due to a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).
  3. Dementia with Lewy Bodies: This type involves the build-up of proteins in the brain, leading to symptoms such as visual hallucinations and motor symptoms like those seen in Parkinson’s disease
  4. Frontotemporal Dementia: This type affects the front and sides of the brain and can cause problems with behavior and language.
  5. Mixed Dementia: This is a condition in which a person has more than one type of dementia.

The effects of dementia can vary depending on the type and stage of the condition, but common symptoms include memory loss, problems with communication, difficulty with visual and spatial abilities, trouble with reasoning or problem-solving, and changes in personality.
