New Parks Associates consumer research reveals that three-quarters of single-family renters express strong interest in having smart home devices and security systems provided by landlords or property managers. As the single-family rental (SFR) market grows amidst ongoing housing affordability challenges, renters increasingly demand internet, security, and smart solutions tailored to their needs.
The firm's latest study, Quantified Consumer: Single-Family Renters - Connectivity & Smart Home, based on surveys of 8,000 U.S. internet households, identifies the features most attractive to renters seeking a connected lifestyle.
"Consumers today expect the same conveniences in single-family rentals that they see in apartments, but they face added barriers in self-installing smart technologies," said Jennifer Kent, VP, Research, Parks Associates. "Property managers have a critical opportunity to meet this demand and create additional value."
Key study findings include:
- 75% of single-family renters show interest in at least one smart home device provided by landlords.
- 60% of renters said that preinstalled security and smart home devices made a rental more appealing.
- 60% of renters are interested in bundles combining gigabit internet and pay-TV.
The research shows high appeal for smart home solutions among younger renters, households with pets, and families with children, indicating strong market opportunities for property owners willing to invest in technology amenities.
