Voice control technology can help elevate what the smart home can be: Insights from Wink

Matt Bornski, Director and Chief Architect of Enterprise Services, Wink, provides insight on several key industry trends for Parks Associates’ 20th-annual CONNECTIONS Conference, which will be held May 24-26 in San Francisco:

How is your company engaging consumers through new technology solutions?

We want people to use Wink more and the Wink app less. The smart home has come a long way, but there are still situations in which it can be cumbersome to pull out your mobile phone, fire up an app, and control a smart product. That’s why we’re really excited about the promise of voice control. Wink was the first smart home platform to partner with Amazon Alexa last year, and the feedback and engagement from our users has been incredible. We feel voice control is a technology that can help elevate what the smart home can be: an immersive, intuitive experience for consumers in which actions take place behind-the-scenes. That's what we're striving to get to.

What is the greatest challenge for the connected home industry in the next year?

Driving mainstream awareness. For all the hype the smart home received in the media last year, we’re still very much in the process of evolving the audience from early adopter to mass consumer. We think that by expanding the traditional concept of the smart home into lifestyle categories that are more palatable - cars or wearables, for example - we’ll be able to demonstrate the many benefits of the smart home to a much wider market.
